May 6th - Kisha Curtis Faces Judge
Friday, May 6th, Kisha Curtis faced Superior Court Judge William Cassini at the Essex County Courthouse regarding the charges filed in March of two fourth-degree offenses for “tormenting and torturing” an animal that carry an 18-month maximum jail sentence, and two disorderly persons offenses that each carry a sentence up to six months. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office hasn’t presented the case to a grand jury for a possible indictment but is expected to do so once additional witnesses are interviewed. In addition to wearing a McDonald's happy meal t-shirt stating keepin' it real like a happy meal, Ms Curtis stood before the judge and plead not guilty. I know what you are thinking, I was in shock as well and still am. I recommend watching some of the live stream footage from the rally outside of the courthouse as well as some priceless photos of Kisha with her tatooed face. The criminal case has given rise to a custody battle over Patrick involving the Associated Humane Societies, the city of Newark, and Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Tinton Falls, where Patrick is being treated. AHS filed a motion this week claiming it has legal rights to Patrick. Judge Cassini on Friday gave the other parties 10 days to file a response, and a hearing is scheduled for June 2.

Prosecutor’s Case No. 11002173
Torture, Neglect, and Abandonment of Dog now known as “Patrick”
Dear Prosecutor Cucinello,
In light of the chronic criminal neglect and abuse committed by the defendent, Ms. Kisha Curtis, against her dog, Patrick; I write to request the full extent of the charges filed against Ms. Curtis be applied without mitigation.
As the veterinary records reflect, the defendent willfully withheld food and water from her dog, Patrick, over the course of several months. His emaciated body revealed the gross negligence, chronic suffering and criminality of his life within her care. Additional physical indicators were multiple, open pressure sores about his skeletal frame and abject dehydration. The final assault occurred while he clung to life - he was wrapped in a trash bag and left at a trash chute. A clear message must be sent to Miss Curtis et al that horrific and inhumane torture and neglect of companion animals will be actively and adroitly prosecuted and no longer condoned within our society and specifically in Newark, NJ.

In closing I respectfully ask: Would you, the judge or the defense attorney want a person of such a mindset living amongst your family, within your community? I assure you, the lawful citizenry of Newark and elsewhere don't either.
Most respectfully,
Lisa Angelini

Re: Kisha C. Curtis, Defendant
Prosecutor’s Case No. 11002173
Torture, Neglect, and Abandonment of Dog now known as “Patrick”
Dear Ms. Cucinello,
In light of the long-standing criminal abuse committed by Ms. Kisha Curtis that occurred over several months and her disposal of 'her' dog left to die in a trash bag, I request she be sentenced to the full extent of the law. A message must be sent to other animal abusers that this is not tolerated in our society.
Ms. Curtis, a defendant in the above-indicated animal abuse case was the 'owner' of a dog known as Patrick. Based on his physical condition upon discovery in the trash bag, she should not be given anything less than the maximum penalty allowed by law. Ms. Curtis neglected the dog, failed to provide nourishment to the extent that the animal, who once was found near death in a garbage bag after being thrown down a garbage chute from the 19th floor of a 22 floor building, was nothing but skin and bones, totally dehydrated. The fact that he survived is a miracle.
Patrick’s condition did not occur overnight. Ms. Curtis let him starve without any thinking about the animal’s welfare. To allow this defendant a plea deal, which would be 18-month probation is unacceptable. To allow a plea deal would be akin to discard the validity of a life. Patrick may be a dog, but he is a living being.
Those who abuse animals for no obvious reason, are "budding psychopaths." They have no empathy and only see the world as what it's going to do for them.
History is full of high-profile examples of this connection:
Patrick Sherrill, who killed 14 coworkers at a post office and then shot himself, had a history of stealing local pets and allowing his own dog to attack and mutilate them.
Earl Kenneth Shriner, who raped, stabbed, and mutilated a 7-year-old boy, had been widely known in his neighborhood as the man who put firecrackers in dogs? rectums and strung up cats.
Brenda Spencer, who opened fire at a San Diego school, killing two children and injuring nine others, had repeatedly abused cats and dogs, often by setting their tails on fire.
Albert DeSalvo, the "Boston Strangler" who killed 13 women, trapped dogs and cats in orange crates and shot arrows through the boxes in his youth.
Carroll Edward Cole, executed for five of the 35 murders of which he was accused, said his first act of violence as a child was to strangle a puppy.
In 1987, three Missouri high school students were charged with the beating death of a classmate. They had histories of repeated acts of animal mutilation starting several years earlier. One confessed that he had killed so many cats he?d lost count. Two brothers who murdered their parents had previously told classmates that they had decapitated a cat.
Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer had impaled dogs, heads, frogs, and cats on sticks.

Patrick's Story
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Patrick's story, please visit AHS for his progress from March 16, 2011, the day he was discovered in a dumpster by a maintenance man, until now. The website provides a detailed account of Patrick's journey, including videos, pictures, and physical therapy updates. He truly is a miracle and close to finding his forever home because his health has improved significantly. Patrick will finally have the opportunity to live a dog's life. Viewing the photos from the day he was found until now is simply heartwarming and provides hope for all those who have suffered from similar neglect, cruelty, and abuse. With the help of a wonderful man at NJSPCA, Capt Yocum, and the fabulous staff at GSVS Pet Hospital, Patrick is on his way to a full recovery and a happy, normal life. We thank them all for their excellent care and consideration, for saving Patrick's life, and reminding us that hope still lives.

Welcome to Patrick's Blog by the NV Movement
Patrick's Journey Part I
I am excited to be here and have the ability to discuss Patrick's story in greater detail. Recently, I became an advocate upon hearing the story of Patrick, as it was an eye opener regarding the extent of animal abuse cases occurring not only in the US, but nationwide. I have witnessed images and watched videos in the past month that have changed my life forever and will probably continue to haunt me for the rest of my life. Animal cruelty must be stopped and if everyone can focus on the fight for animal rights, we truly can make a difference by uniting and working together. . The Nevada Senate has already passed 3 bills this week strengthening legislation toward offenders. The Assembly must approve the bills next for the changes to be implemented into Nevada law. I will be posting links shortly with email petitions to encourage the Assembly to approve these bills. This blog is a place for people to share ideas, updates, and events promoting animal cruelty prevention and is an open communication forum. I am anxious to meet new supporters and anticipating my current supporters on Facebook and Twitter will follow along as well. I look forward to any comments and feedback posted on my blog, website, and Facebook or Twitter. Stay tuned for some current information regarding abuse cases in Nevada, useful links pertaining to the prevention of animal cruelty, and urgent petitions requiring signatures and sharing with your family and friends.
